The Right Kind of “Proud Woman”

The world needs more “proud girls”. Girls who walk with head held high, understand their true calling and are unapologetic for being female.

To make this picture of “God’s idea” clear, let’s take a walk to the garden of Eden.

When He Made “Woman”

Now imagine this scene at creation: Genesis 1, God, the Almighty God was busy speaking things into being. “Let there be light”, and it was so… And he called for another, and another, and they appeared, and He saw that it was good.

Then, a meeting cropped up; the Trinity in verse 27 hatched out a new project – let us make man in our own image. We’ll make them male and female, and they’ll have dominion over everything we’ve created. Deal! They didn’t take a quantum leap into this awesome project. They tidied up other things and rested on the seventh day.

Girl, hope you’re catching the gist?

Ok! Here we go…Genesis 2:7, God took dust from the ground, formed man, and breathe into him.
Come on Adam, this is Eden, you take care of it, ok. Dress and keep it. Then God, in His wisdom and love kept observing Adam, and said, no, “it is not good that the man should be alone… ” (Verse 18)

But, he has to discover this vacuum in his life first, so that when she comes, he’ll love, cherish and honor her. She’s a unique soul. Precious things don’t come without desire.

Adam, I’ve got some cool job for you here. Name these animals. Take your time, ok. Yes, Father, Adam replied. Oh, see that hairy looking creature, I’ll call you Lion. And you smaller one with horns over there, you are Goat. As he named the last, he felt the pinch, I’m lonely, none of these creatures suit me.

Aha! That’s it, God said to Himself.
Adam, come over! Now lie down here, and sleep. I’ve got something to work on. Then the first surgical operation was done. God ripped his side open, and took off a rib, and sewed his flesh up.
He spurred into action, molding a divine craftwork, and then made you – woman.

Oh, sweetness! He took her hand and walked over to Adam’s side. “Eve, hold on here.”

Waky waky… Adam, wake up. He opened his eyes, gradually, then jumped on his feet. What creature is this? Hair flowing down her shoulders, eyes blue and hypnotizing, skin supple and radiant, anatomy stunning.
His mouth flung open, and like a rehearsed piece of poetry, the words came, “this is now the bone of my bones, and the flesh of my flesh: she shall be called WOMAN, because she was taken out of man” (Genesis 2:23).

Hey girl, are you screaming over there! Cheers, baby!

The idea, the process, and the plan for creating you – a woman – should make you indeed, “proud”. You have a unique identity.

Embracing Your Feminine Identity

Identity simply means your name, what makes you “you”. Just like your name, my name “Chiamaka Oji” is an identity, my identity. And it spells two things: “who” I am, and “whose” I am. I am Chiamaka, from Oji’s family. That is my identity, by birth.

By creation, you and I, have an identity. A woman. A creation of God. Due to the fall of man, which made us lose our identity in Christ, beyond creation, redemption establishes the other part of your identity – whose you are. Because, “if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

If any man, if you are in Christ, you are and should be a new creature. Totally yielded and submissive to His design and calling for you – His child, a woman, and an individual.

Isak Dinesen further explains the characteristics of this pride – He does not strive towards a happiness, or comfort, which may be irrelevant to God’s idea of him. His success is the idea of God, successfully carried through, and he is in love with his destiny.

Did that strike a chord?

Your Identity, the Path to Success

Women are fiercely charged to strive to be successful – be fulfilled and free. Seminars, empowerment to programs, workshops, media talks, books – a host of them being fired at teaching women “how” to be successful.

Yes! To deny the fact that women need to arise out of some apparent marginalization and mediocrity will be biting my tongue with my teeth. Because, of course, God isn’t clapping and smiling as He watches women crawl instead of walk, run and fly – living life to the fullest, for His glory. He created men and women, in unique ways, for fundamentally different purposes, yet of equal value in His eyes.

But, we can’t know the “how” to success and fulfillment without going to the drawing board, to the blue print, the “why” of womanhood.

A “proud girl”, like Isak Dinesen says, strives to find success in God’s design for her life. She knows that without Him, she can do nothing (John 15:5). She acknowledges that God created her with a plan in mind (Jeremiah 29:11) and that divorcing God’s design to marry the world’s description of womanhood and “success” would be a slap on God’s face.
Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?” (Romans 9:20).

The Identity Blunder

I’ve got to fill my personal data on various occasions, and when asked of my sex (gender), I see “male”, “female”, “others” as options. “Others”?! Which others? He made them male and female. Where did the others emerge from? That’s just to show you how our society dares God by creating their own mold, “my identity”.

But I’m not a party to that sickness, you say.

Ok! How about other lies that our society has sold to us. I know them cos I once took a bite from some of such.

There shouldn’t be roles. We are all equal. Everything everywhere should be split equally. Bury submission. Women, get out of home keeping and go find fulfillment out there. Be free. Be independent. Be you. Do what you feel like doing. It’s your life. Don’t let “nothing” and no one run it for you.

That, my friend, are subtle ways the society engineers us to shrink out of the Biblical Femininity mold, into a world defined, a self-designed mold of femininity, and womanhood, and YOU.

God desires that more than a mere recognition of you being woman, by anatomy (biologically), you understand “why” He made you a woman. Your identity and calling. You can’t make the best use of a thing unless you understand what it was made for – why a fork has teeth and a spoon doesn’t. And the Manufacturer’s guide (Bible) is the best bet to finding infallible answers about your identity.

In that understanding of your identity, girl, lies the secret to your success and fulfillment.

Be a “proud girl” – proudly WOMAN.
