The Ultimate Tip for Knowing “the Will of God”

Will of God

I went on a 14 days fast just to know the will of God.

Seeking a solitary confinement, I went to a camp on the mountain, having only my bible with me. On the twelfth day of the fast, I had this crystal clear revelation – Bro Daniel was confirmed as “the will of God” for me.

Have you heard such outrageous ritual of knowing the will of God, especially when it gets to marriage?

It could sound so extraordinary making you feel like you’ve not even started your journey of getting to know God’s will.

But girl, first of all, you and I know seeking God’s will is not just when it gets to marriage issues.

It should be a lifestyle for every Christian.

Like the Psalmist said, “Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.” (Psalm 40: 7,8)

With the year coming to a swift end in a few weeks, you’re likely making lots of plans for the New Year. As this load of plans keep coming to mind, the accompanying question is – could that be the right step to take, in other words, is that the will of God for me?

In marriage, career, job, education, friendship… we ought to, and I believe, most of us seek to do God’s will.

But just in case you’re wondering, “why bother to do God’s will?”

“God’s will”, in the context of our discussion, means – God’s plan, desire, purpose or command. God is Sovereign; “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55: 8,9). He has plans and purposes that our finite minds can’t conceive without His guidance. Therefore, if you choose to chart your life’s course without Him, you’ll sway out of track driving ferociously down the wrong road till at last; you discover you’re in a wrong destination – wasted time, wasted life.

So how do I get to know this “will of God”, you ask.

Twenty one days fast? Thirty one days night vigil? Revelations… Dreams… Visions? Reading that book on “Principles of Knowing God’s Secrets”? What’s the best catch?

I discovered a simple and tested tip for that. It is contained right in the Bible.

Ready to see that? Ok, let’s go.

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewingof your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Romans 12:2)

Did you see that three-in-one model? Non-conformity, transformation, renewal of mind – that is the ultimate tip to prove (discern) the will of God.

How is that done?

As Christians, we are not to pattern our lives according to that of this sinful world – thinking or behavior, values or lifestyle (1 John 2: 15-17). Instead we should be transformed (changed completely, in a good way) by God’s word. Transformation starts with repentance and turning away from sins, and then as we renew our mind (mental faculties, reasoning or understanding) in His word, we are transformed more and more into His image.

Renewal (making new, fresh, or strong again) entails – spending time reading and meditating on God’s word, and exploring how it applies to our lives (Psalm 119: 11, 48 John 8: 31, 32;15:7). A renewed mind surrenders to God’s word, allowing it influence every area of her life, rather than distort scriptural truths so as to avoid some commands that her flesh detests – e.g. purity, self denial, submission. Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works”. The entirety of God’s word is given to transform us into models for Christ, doing His whole will.

By having a spiritually transformed life and renewed mind, we are able to prove (discern) and follow God’s will – plans, desires, purposes – in every area of our life. The Bible may not pinpoint to you who to marry, which course to study, if we should embark on that journey or not, take up that offer, buy that cloth or drink… or a thousand and one other choices you make. But it does outline to us, in black and white, guiding principle that should influence all our choices and decisions.

“What is necessary is that we have a renewed mind, that is so shaped and so governed by the revealed will of God in the Bible, that we see and assess all relevant factors with the mind of Christ, and discern what God is calling us to do. This is very different from constantly trying to hear God’s voice saying do this and do that.” (John Piper)

Did that strike a chord?

Not that God can’t speak to you audibly, or in a still small voice, or through visions and revelations. He does. But if your life isn’t transformed, and you mind renewed by His word; your heart will be so occupied with your own thoughts that you might not even hear that still small voice of the Holy Spirit. God said this to Ezekiel about the Israelite, “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumbling block of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them? Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord God; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart, and putteth the stumbling block of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet; I the Lord will answer him that cometh according to the multitude of his idols;” (Ezekiel14: 3,4)

Just like the case of the sister in our story above who embarked on marathon prayers just to receive a confirmation over Bro Daniel.

Also, an un-renewed mind will find it difficult to submit to God’s will. Because the truth is – God’s ways are different from ours. That longing in your heart may be completely different from God’s plan for you. If you haven’t learnt to submit to His will,to say “yes Lord” – not my will but thine be done (Luke 22:42) – you’ll resist God’s will even when you know it. Just like the people of Israel who told Jeremiah, “As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD, we will not hearken unto thee.” (Jeremiah 44:16)

And you know God doesn’t really force people to obey Him.

But He’ll simply treat you like He did to the Israelites who refused to trust and obey, “And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul” (Psalm 106: 15).

So girl, get into the scripture!

As you soak yourself in God’s word, reading, reflecting on, and re-committing your ways into His hands, you’ll prove what is that good, acceptable, and perfect will of God.

“Good” – because it leads to Christian’s all-round growth and fulfillment;

“Acceptable” to God – because it serves His purposes, even though we may not always understand it; and

“Perfect” – because we cannot improve on God’s will. It is absolutely what is best for us in relation to fulfilling His purposes.

“The secret of your future lies in the scripture.”
